IOWMMOC BRANCH RALLY

ISLE OF WIGHT STEAM RAILWAY, HAVENSTREET

September 1st-2nd 2001

This year as in previous years, the Isle of Wight Branch Rally 2001 was held at the much liked venue of Havenstreet Station on the IOW Steam Railway Line.

For those that were around on Saturday 1st afternoon there was a run (as usual) Wolverton Manor Country Garden Fair, nr Shorwell. A photograph of the picturesque village of Shorwell is shown opposite. After this everyone returned to Havenstreet for the now traditional BBQ. This of course was the same day as the England - Germany World Cup Qualifier, and our magazine editor, Andy Smith, was considering bringing along his TV to watch the match on!!

On the Sunday 2nd, the day began early for the organising committee but the Minors began arriving from about 10am... in total there were about 65 Morris Minors in attendance. Diversions on the day aside from the display of cars ranged from classic bus trips to local scenic attractions (free of charge) driven by our rally chairman Alan Peeling, a calvacade of interesting cars in the arena commentated by Andy Smith, and reduced fares for travel on the IOW Steam Railway for entrants.

In the middle of the afternoon, before the prize-giving 4 old island Morris Minors and their owners were invited into the arena for a photo opportunity with the classic bus as they all had the old-style DL registered license plates.

Left-to-right, the owners: Lester Elliot, Dave Richards, Pam Williams, Malcolm Jones.

Thanks to Dave and Doreen Richards for e-mailing this photo to us.

As usual, the IOWMMOC ran self-judging for all classes of Minors (except Custom and Modified), with entrants in one class judging another. Then at 3pm all the winners and runners-up were invited into the arena so the winning cars could be seen.

25 visitors also attended on Sunday; cars from the 30s, 40s, and 50's were represented, including a very nice Renault 10, several Capri's, and an exceptional 1958 Beetle with the oval back screen. The Beetle won the visiting car section.

We have had much positive feedback on the 2001 rally and hope to continue the friendly atmosphere for the rally in 2002! We look forward to seeing you there!

We'd also like to thank everyone who has sent feedback to our e-mail address, it's much appreciated! If you have any photos or comments, please send them to: emma@iowmmoc.org.uk
